Want to know what Labor Day weekend traffic might be like?
Project: VPP Suite Tool Use for BMC's online press release and travel suggestions for Labor Day weekend 2016
Lead Agency: BMC
Supporting Agency: Maryland Transportation Authority, State Highway Administration, AAA Mid Atlantic
PDA Suite Tools Used: Trend Map, Congestion Scan
Description: The Baltimore Metropolitan Council used the VPP Suite's Trend Map and Congestion Scan apps to develop travel time recommendations for Labor Day weekend 2016 by looking at previous Labor Day travel conditions, with particular focus on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge (354,000 vehicle crossings during Labor Day weekend in 2015.) These recommendations were then posted on BMC's website as an advisory for Marylanders to better plan their holiday travel.
Highlights: Tropical Storm Hermine greatly impacted travel for the entire weekend, which was then analyzed as a return trip comparison between Labor Day 2015 vs. 2016. Results showed travelers overwhelmingly heeded storm warnings.
