Project: Using Dashboard for the I-276 PA Turnpike Closure
Lead Agency: PennDOT
Supporting Agency: PA Turnpike Commission
PDA Suite Tools Used: Dashboard, Trend Map
Description: On Friday, January 20, 2017 a fractured steel truss was spotted under the bridge decking on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River bridge, that connects the PA and NJ Turnpikes. Subsequently, the bridge and Turnpike was closed in both directions, and all traffic rerouted through the regional roadway network. To help manage the impact of an additional 42,000 motorists each day, PennDOT’s Traffic Management Center operators used the PDA Suite’s Dashboard tool to monitor travel times during peak periods as part of their Traffic Management Plan.
Highlights: PennDOT realized several benefits in using Dashboard, including: 1) helping to mitigate the effects of the closure; 2) identifying unusually high travel time increases; 3) identifying incidents, monitor signal timing changes (because of increased traffic), and; 4) providing daily reports to several entities, including the PA Transportation Secretary.
